Contemporary Calgary Art Studio

At Contemporary Calgary, students and teachers are immersed in a dynamic arts-focused space that has lots of big ideas to explore!

Housed in the Centennial Planetarium, an iconic example of Brutalist architecture, Contemporary Calgary offers endless possibilities for community-based experiential learning. Frequently-changing exhibitions, distinctive interior spaces, and dedicated gallery staff ensure that each day at the gallery is unique, engaging, and an opportunity to understand the transformative power of the visual arts.

Our exhibitions are a great jumping off point for the Contemporary Calgary Art Studio experience. Students can start their explorations with topics such as artistic media and methods, storytelling through imagery, and the visual expression of complex ideas. Endless possibilities follow: students can make their own artworks in our

workshop, put on a play in our theater, enjoy a short film in the dome, explore architectural styles and approaches, and engage with contemporary Indigenous art through our ongoing Indigenous residency and mentorship program, Ksahkomiitapiiks.

With countless topics to explore, a week spent at Contemporary Calgary will help students develop and build capacity for critical thinking, close looking, and creative expression.

We look forward to welcoming you to Contemporary Calgary Art Studio for our pilot year with Campus Calgary!

Contemporary Calgary is located at 701 11 St SW, immediately adjacent to the Bow River and accessible via the Downtown West-Kerby Station.

Outdoor Leadership School at Glenbow Ranch

Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park and other lands that possess important heritage and ecological value. Established in 2007 through the generosity of the Harvie Family, our Mission is to protect and promote Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park through engagement, education, collaboration and conservation.

Located just 15 minutes west of Calgary, Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is an easily accessible oasis of fescue grassland, wetland, and riparian habitat, offering breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains. As a working Ranch, the park is also home to over 200 cattle that graze the grasslands throughout the year. Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is an incredible living showcase of the various habitats and wildlife found within Alberta, housing over 30% of the types of flora and fauna that can be found within the province.

Just as the Bow River winds through the landscape, the story of the people that have used this land winds through its rich history. From Indigenous Peoples camping by the river and hunting bison, through to homesteaders and the residents of the Town of Glenbow, many have called this land home. Today, we are able to see this history in incredible detail following archaeological research, and through a wealth of documents and photographs. The park houses TIPI rings,

remains of homesteader buildings, the Town of Glenbow General Store dating back to 1909, and is still a major route for the CPKC Railway, with the line through Glenbow having been originally built in 1883.

In partnership with Alberta Parks, Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation has a unique opportunity to protect, preserve and promote Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. GRPF operates the visitor center, offers historical and bird watching park tours, school field trips, summer camps, and park talks, as well as conducting conservation programs and advocacy work to protect this incredible space.

Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation is proud to host Outdoor Leadership School in partnership with Campus Calgary. Through journalling, walking in stunning natural surroundings, learning about the rich history of the land, and getting hands on with artifacts, an immersive week at Outdoor Leadership School gives students a unique opportunity to slow down, to listen, feel, and to look beyond the obvious. As we ask, what connects us to nature, how do we balance the needs of growing communities whilst preserving natural spaces, how can the past help to shape the future, and as future stewards, what can we do to raise awareness of and preserve this special place for generations to come?

Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is truly a gift to the people of Alberta and beyond.

Youth Singers School

What role do the performing arts play in building identity and community?

How can I express ideas, stories and feelings in an artistic way through the performing arts?

Why are diverse skills and perspectives valuable?

How do the performing arts bring people together?

How does the process of artistic creation lead to self-discovery?

As a Campus Calgary site, Youth Singers School is committed to providing hands-on personalized learning experiences in our community setting. A week at Youth Singers School invites students and teachers to connect and learn with the experienced and passionate Youth Singers of Calgary (YSC) staff in this youth-centred performing arts space.

Youth Singers School will look different for each participating class depending on their learning focus. All teachers and students will engage in hands-on, authentic performing arts experiences and make sense of these experiences through activities, reflection

and journalling. Participants of Youth Singers School will learn and collaborate with various professionals and volunteers of their choice while in attendance. These experts may include:

• Choral directors

• Choreographers

• Theatre directors

• Musicians

• Lighting designers

• Sound technicians

• Costume designers

• Set and prop creators

• Graphic designers

• Cultural community leaders

Our ATCO Performing Arts (APAC) is a well-organized, safe space with multiple entry points for inquiry. The space offers much to Youth Singers School learners and teachers, including four performance studios, a recording studio, a music library, costume and set building workshops, and much more. Participants of Youth Singers School will be encouraged explore and interact with areas of APAC in ways that deepen their understanding.

Youth Singers School experiences will be uniquely designed to best meet the needs of students while utilizing all the resources this location and our team has to offer.
