Zoo School
School Information
Zoo School offers students the wonderful opportunity to observe and learn about local and international animals and to explore the diverse world of living things. Students have the opportunity to explore the Zoo, participate in education programs, meet keepers, practice the art and science of observation, and come nose to nose with at least one of the Zoo's animal residents.
Examples of study topics include:
- Exploring the rich diversity of living things
- Taking a closer look at Canadian wildlife and ecoregions
- Endangered species and conservation
- Investigating the role of Zoos
- Developing sensitivity to environmental issues and actions by connecting with nature

After 22 years of teaching primary education I enjoyed the opportunity of bringing my own expertise to the Chevron Open Minds Zoo School and combining it with this amazing program. This experience has really had a dynamic impact on the way I view the student’s learning experience. I have learned to “facilitate” the deep observational and journaling experience in a way that maximizes a child’s intuitive and curious nature beyond what I’ve ever done before… I’ve also become even more aware of the urgent need for us to be good stewards of the Earth through my interaction with the Calgary Zoological Society. My teaching is reflecting a more intentional approach to brining these attitudes into my classroom and school! I am very grateful for the experience of the Chevron Open Minds Program in combination with the Zoo.
